Canada Day Parade Registration

Canada Day Parade Registration

This is the person with whom the Town of Canmore will coordinate all parade information and safety details.

Canada Day Parade Rules and Regulations

1. The point of contact for each parade entry will be sent a digital liability waiver form to complete. It is the responsibility of each point of contact to ensure that every member of the parade entry has signed the waiver before arriving on July 1.

2. The ultimate responsibility for safety lies with each individual parade entry. All entrants must comply with all Canada Day parade rules and regulations, and they must also comply with all government regulations, safety codes, manufacturer's recommendations, and similar standards necessary to safely operate floats and equipment.

3. Canada Day parade officials can deny any parade entry on or before parade day that does not meet the parade rules, regulations, or community standards. We all share a mutual responsibility to ensure community wellbeing. The Canada Day parade offers a space for all voices and identities; however, personal or political attacks and cultural appropriation will not be tolerated in any form

4. All Entrants must be willing and sufficiently physically fit to maintain both the parade pace and no less than 3 meters of spacing between parade entrants. Entrants and/or groups unable or refusing to maintain parade walking pace and/or spacing may be removed from the parade route.

5. Parade officials reserve the right to remove any entrant/group at any time whether as a result of safety concerns, interference with the parade’s progress or any other reason that parade officials deem appropriate.

6. All participants/groups are prohibited from throwing any items (e.g. candy, buttons, freezies, etc) along the parade route. Items can be distributed to parade patrons, but these must be delivered hand to hand.  This prevents parade viewers from running into the street in front of vehicles and/or livestock, which could result in injury.

7. Money collection or solicitation along the parade route is strictly prohibited unless expressly permitted in writing prior to the parade by the Town of Canmore.

8. All decorative materials must be fire retardant, and no flammable materials may be carried on the float, in vehicles, or on people.

9. All motorized floats must have a working and fully serviced dry chemical fire extinguisher. All fire extinguishers must be readily available to the driver/operator. Operators must be familiar with the proper operation of the fire extinguishers.

10. All vehicles must be in good mechanical condition and properly serviced prior to the parade. Special attention must be paid to cooling systems, exhaust systems, brakes, steering and tires.

11. Drivers of a vehicle must be properly licensed to drive the vehicle (i.e. Class 5 Alberta Driver’s license).

12. Drivers and passengers sitting inside the vehicle or on floats must have means of a rapid escape in an emergency.

13. Floats may be a maximum height of 15 feet from the ground and must be capable of clearing all obstacles.

14. Float organizers are not permitted to have passengers/participants on vehicle roofs or on roof racks.

15. Float drivers require a clear 180-degree field of vision through the front of the vehicle.

16. All participants bringing their own property to be used in the parade (e.g. automobiles, horses, etc.) must be able to provide proof of insurance; there is no coverage provided to parade participants by the Town of Canmore.

17. Each float rider must have appropriate body support or seatbelts securely fastened to the float. In case of seat belts, the belts must be worn on the outside of the costume. In special cases, the parade coordinator may authorize the use of railings around the perimeter of the deck. This railing must be of solid construction with top and intermediate rails. The top rail must be a minimum of 36 inches above the deck.  Please inquire by email to events@canmore.ca in advance of arrival to secure permissions.

18. Alcoholic beverages, drugs, and smoking are prohibited under all circumstances.

In the past, the parade route has had designated "splash" and "dry" zones; however, water fights pose an increased safety concern for parade participants and viewers. For the 2024 Canada Day parade, all floats and parade entries are prohibited from using water, with the exception of water consumption. This means that water fights (including between a parade entry's participants), water balloons, water guns, hoses, buckets of water, etc. are not allowed.
