Wastewater Treatment Plant Odour Update
For more than three years, our community has experienced bad smells on the breeze in certain areas of town downwind of the plant. We’ve invested in upgrades since 2023 and have seen some improvements to air quality, but unfortunately, the mitigations haven't fully solved the issue.
Today, Council heard an update on next steps in addressing the issue. The odour is coming from the digesters, which are two open air tanks, which will need to be capped, along with a system installed to treat the emissions from the digesters. Work is ongoing to design a project, which will come forward for council's consideration as soon as it is ready.
Revised Land Use Bylaw Amendment 2025-27 – Three Sisters Gateway District Additional Uses
Council approved a Land Use Bylaw Amendment for the Three Sisters Gateway District, which will allow for a wider range of uses in the District. Some of the additional uses include Pet Care Facility, Stores Facility and Veterinary Clinic.
FireSmart - Future Projects
Council approved a number of submissions to the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) funding opportunities for 2025. With their approval, administration will submit four applications for FRIAA’s consideration, one in the Vegetation Management/Fuel Modification discipline, and three in the Planning, Public Education, Interagency Co-operation and Cross-Training, Legislation and Development disciplines.
We also received funding from FRIAA for a two-year grant funded Regional FireSmart Coordinator, who will work across the Town of Canmore, MD of Bighorn and Kananaskis Improvement District focusing on community education, FireSmart preparedness plan, emergency preparedness and response coordination and vegetation management and fire risk reduction.
