The next Town of Canmore general municipal election is on Monday, October 20, 2025.
Electors will be voting for one mayor and six town councillors.
Qualifications of a Candidate
A person may be nominated as a candidate in the Canmore municipal election if, on Nomination Day, the person is:
- 18 years of age or older,
- A Canadian citizen,
- A resident of Canmore for the six consecutive months immediate preceding Nomination Day, and
- Not otherwise ineligible or disqualified.
Sections 22 – 24 of the Local Authorities Election Act set out under what circumstances a person is not eligible for nomination. Anyone submitting a nomination is responsible for ensuring they are not in violation of any condition of eligibility.
Nomination Period and Nomination Day
The nomination period begins on January 2, 2025 and runs until 12 p.m. (noon) on September 22, 2025 (Nomination Day).
Notice of Intent
Individuals may incur campaign expenses or accept contributions before they are nominated as long as they have submitted a Notice of Intent to the returning officer at the Canmore Civic Centre.
For anyone that has not submitted a Notice of Intent before they are nominated, the form must be submitted on the same day that Nomination Papers are filed.
Nomination Papers
Anyone wishing to run for office must complete a Nomination Paper and Candidate's Acceptance.
It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure nomination requirements are complete before papers are submitted. These requirements include:
- a minimum of 25 eligible electors must provide their names, complete street addresses, and signatures on the nomination paper
- nomination papers must be accompanied by a $100 deposit provided in cash, by certified cheque, by money order, or using a debit or credit card,
- the candidate's signature must be witnessed by a Commissioner of Oaths or a returning officer.
Submitting Nomination Papers
A candidate or another person acting on behalf of a candidate may submit the Nomination Paper and Candidate Acceptance at the Canmore Civic Centre between 8:30 4:30, and Monday through Friday. Nomination Papers may also be submitted by mail or courier to the Returning Officer, Town of Canmore, 902 7th Avenue, Canmore, Alberta, T1W 3K1.
Anyone who wishes to submit nomination papers in person to the returning officer can schedule an appointment by emailing municipal.clerk@canmore.ca.
The returning officer is available by appointment to witness candidate signatures - email municipal.clerk@canmore.ca to schedule a time. Commissioner of Oaths services are also available at the Canmore Registry and through law offices.
Candidate Resources
Individuals may submit a Notice of Intent either before they have been nominated or when they are nominated. A person is considered nominated when their Nomination Paper and Candidate Acceptance have been accepted by the returning officer.
