The Palliser Trail Area Structure Plan (ASP) is a framework to guide future change and growth in the Palliser Trail area. The original ASP was adopted in the year 2000, and is being reviewed and updated to ensure the plan remains relevant in today’s context and that future development contributes to community priorities.

Project Information

An Area Structure Plan (ASP) is a high-level land use plan that provides a framework for future development in a specific area. It identifies a high-level future vision for the area and provides a conceptual layout for general land uses, utility infrastructure, roads, public spaces and recreation.

We will review the current Palliser Trail ASP to ensure it remains relevant today and identify opportunities for improvement. Updated policy will be informed by several key goals, including:

  • Prioritizing the development of diverse, affordable, and attainable housing.
  • Encouraging the creation of a complete, mixed-use, and walkable neighbourhood.
  • Creating new opportunities on Town of Canmore and Canmore Community Housing (CCH) lands.

The ASP study area is outlined below.

The current timeframe envisions completing the ASP update in summer 2023.

Background

Land within the Palliser Trail area provides opportunities for future development that could contribute to alleviating the need for affordable housing while also creating a vibrant, livable, and complete community. An updated ASP for the Palliser Trail area will provide the direction needed to inform potential land use changes and the overall approach towards managing these environmentally important lands. This project will establish a revised future vision for the lands within the Palliser Trail area that would replace the one that was developed in 2000 and reflects currents needs and priorities.
