6th Avenue Streetscape Enhancements - South of Main Street to Centennial Park

Project Overview

6th Avenue serves as the primary pedestrian and vehicle access to Centennial Park, and is also one of the main corridors to residences in South Canmore. Festivals and events in Centennial Park draw heavy traffic, both vehicular and pedestrian, from Town Centre down 6th Avenue.

6th Avenue from Main Street to Centennial Park has been identified for rehabilitation as part of the Town’s Pavement Management Plan. Rehabilitation of the street presents opportunities to incorporate streetscape enhancements including wider sidewalks, street furnishings, landscaping, drainage and Storm Water Management. Over the past two years the Town has pursued survey and developed a Preliminary Concept

for the design of the street. In addition to rehabilitation and enhancements on 6TH Avenue, works will include drainage improvements at the intersection of 7TH Avenue with the alley south of 7TH Street as part of the project scope.

Project Objectives

The consulting team will prepare a Final Concept Recommendation. The refined Concept will consider, existing site constraints including utilities and available right-of-way, rehabilitating the pavement structure to eliminate frost heaving, improving the pedestrian realm with wider sidewalks, reducing crossing distances with curb extensions (bulbs), ensuring positive drainage, collecting and managing storm water runoff, landscaping, site furnishings, and accommodating vehicle turning movements. The concept will be consistent with the look and feel of Main Street, Centennial Park, the Civic Corridor including 6TH Avenue, and the 7TH Avenue Plaza,. The aesthetic shall be consistent with Canmore’s contemporary mountain community, while being functional and enhancing comfort, safety, and enjoyment for users. It is expected that the 6TH Avenue streetscape will beautify the popular corridor leading from Main Street to Centennial Park. The recommended Concept will be presented to Council and Stakeholders for feedback before proceeding with detailed design.
