Canmore, by virtue of its inspirational mountain setting and the astonishing diversity of its residents, is a community rich with culture. The Town of Canmore is committed to providing leadership in the support and development of arts and culture in our community. This leadership is expressed through funding a wide range of cultural initiatives and community celebrations, all of which support the development of community spirit and identity. The Town’s Cultural Policy was approved by Council in 1993. The goal was to ensure that the planning of Culture and the provision of cultural facilities was done in a manner that provides both quality and consistency of services to meet the Cultural needs of the residents of the community. The policy was designed to serve the artists and audiences from the very young to the very old from the first time explorer to the professional. In 1996, the Canmore Community Public Art Program was established. It provides a means of commissioning new works by Canmore artists for the dual purpose of VIP gift presentation by Town officials and acquiring a body of public art for the beautification of public places and for Canmore citizens’ appreciation. As well as the benefits to the community, the selection process enhances the profile of a local artist. The Community Public Art Program selects an artist and a medium every second year. In September 2002, the Town of Canmore received the Province’s Innovation Award of Community Excellence for the Community Public Art Program.
