Arts and Culture

Canmore, by virtue of its inspirational mountain setting and the astonishing diversity of its residents, is a community rich with culture. The Town of Canmore is committed to providing leadership in the support and development of arts and culture in our community. This leadership is expressed through funding a wide range of cultural initiatives and community celebrations, all of which support the development of community spirit and identity.

The Town’s Cultural Policy was approved by Council in 1993. The goal was to ensure that the planning of Culture and the provision of cultural facilities was done in a manner that provides both quality and consistency of services to meet the Cultural needs of the residents of the community. The policy was designed to serve the artists and audiences from the very young to the very old from the first time explorer to the professional.

In 1996, the Canmore Community Public Art Program was established. It provides a means of commissioning new works by Canmore artists for the dual purpose of VIP gift presentation by Town officials and acquiring a body of public art for the beautification of public places and for Canmore citizens’ appreciation. As well as the benefits to the community, the selection process enhances the profile of a local artist. The Community Public Art Program selects an artist and a medium every second year. In September 2002, the Town of Canmore received the Province’s Innovation Award of Community Excellence for the Community Public Art Program.

Elevation Place - MILESTONE CELEBRATIONS EVENTS:

As we prepare for the opening of our brand new, award winning facility, we are celebrating the union of different groups and features of the building. In the lead up to the official opening day, the Milestone Celebrations team consisting of both Town staff and several community members representing the different groups, have been working hard to celebrate this momentus occasion!

SHOW ME YOURS! - In early 2012, we held this event, which brought together the user groups of Elevation Place to showcase their activities. It was a really fun night, and people were introduced to new things and new people.

CLIMBING - SERIOUS FUN! - Also in mid 2012, we held a Climbing presentation night which enthralled the community in the fun of climbing and the possibilities of the new climbing gym in Elevation Place. It featured Stacey and Vikki Weldon, who are well known in the climbing community, and they gave a great presentation!

WATER IN MOTION - Later in the year, we worked with the Canmore Pool user groups for the 'Water in Motion' celebration, where each group collected water from each of the different water sources around Canmore. They were collected in beautiful handmade vessels by local glassblower Nicole Tremblay and are currently on display at the Canmore Civic Centre, until the time comes to bring them all ceremonially together into the new Canmore Pool at Elevation Place.

A video was made by Martin Finnerty on the 'Water in Motion' collection, and you can view it HERE.
