Special Programs

The Town of Canmore Solid Waste Services runs a number of special programs throughout the year. Dates for these events can be found in the 2012 Waste & Recycling Calendar as well as in the Events Calendar.

Community Cleanup

Volunteers are needed to help 'Keep Canmore Clean'. Garbage bags will be provided and you can also adopt an area!

The Spring Community Clean Up will start at the Canmore Recreation Centre (1900 8th Avenue) on May 26th, 2012 between 8AM and 1PM. A free breakfast will be provided for the volunteers. There will be many door prizes (donated by local individuals and organizations). Plus - there will be a prize for the most unique piece of litter collected.

Large Item Clean Up - Starting on May 7th, 2012 Please note: This program operates from       May 7th, 2012 to Nov 5th, 2012

(no collection on stat holidays). The Town of Canmore will offer a weekly Large Item Clean Up Program for residential addresses on Mondays. Please be aware that there are limited number of spaces available for registration each Monday.

Residents wishing to participate in the Large Item Clean Up must call 403.678.1580 to register their address & waste materials. Registration will be available from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Please ensure acceptable items are placed at the end of your driveway or back lane by your assigned pick up date. Ensure all items are contained / bundled in a tidy pile. For safety reasons please ensure refrigerator doors are completely removed.

Acceptable Items: Old furniture, White Goods i.e. stove & dryer, fridge (door removed on fridge), mattresses etc.

Unacceptable Items: Tires, propane tanks, commercial waste, construction, renovation & demolition waste, hazardous waste, automotive parts & automotive batteries, etc.( Any items that can be recycled at the Recycling Depot.)

Leaf and Grass Waste

The Town of Canmore provides a Leaf & Grass Collection program during the warmer months. There is one collection point located at the 115 Boulder Crescent Recycling Depot.

Acceptable material: includes leaves, grass clippings, hedge trimmings and garden waste only. Please ensure no plastic bags are disposed of in the collection container.

Unacceptable materials: include any wood products and branches with a diameter greater than 1 mm.( no bigger then your pinky finger)

All collected material is transferred to the Francis Cooke Regional Class III Landfill Site to be composted.

Scrub and Brush Collection Program

The Town of Canmore provides a Scrub & Brush Collection Program during the warmer months. There is one collection point located at the 115 Boulder Crescent Recycling Depot.

Acceptable materials: includes branches, small trees (less than 1.5m in length), shrubs and twigs. Please ensure no plastic bags are disposed of in the collection container.

Unacceptable materials: include stumps, painted / stained or glue bonded wood and other construction, renovation and demolition waste.

All collected material is transferred to the Francis Cooke Class III Landfill to be chipped and used as mulch.

Toxic Round Up and Paint Exchange

Check your home for potentially hazardous products you no longer need such as paints, pesticides & herbicides, cleaners, aerosols, solvents, poisons and flammables. Drop them off and we'll ensure they are disposed of properly.

There are four events in the Bow Valley: two in Canmore (100 Glacier Drive, Public Works building), one in Banff and one in Exshaw.

Full or partially full cans of paint are also accepted for disposal or exchange. If you need paint, come and help yourself to some free cans at our paint exchange table.
