What is the Emergency Public Warning System?

The Town of Canmore falls within the Calgary Region eligible to access the Alberta broadcast warning system to alert the public of a life-threatening emergency or disaster.

The Emergency Public Warning System (EPWS) is the only system in North America designed to give local government officials the ability to broadcast an emergency warning quickly and directly to radio, cable and television stations. Environment Canada (severe weather) and Alberta Environment (flood forecasting) are able to broadcast warnings.

Examples when the EPWS might be activated include a tornado touchdown, or severe weather, a major release of dangerous goods, a flash flood, or a life threatening child abduction.

The EPWS can transmit warnings to local broadcasters for rebroadcast to the public through CKUA-FM transmitters. This system operates at no cost to municipalities or broadcasters.
