The Policing Committee is to act as a liaison between Council, the RCMP detachment, Town Administration and the citizens of Canmore in fostering responsible community actions towards the creation of a safe, secure community. The committee shall do this by encouraging an environment which allows for public concerns to be addressed by all affected parties. The Committee shall:
oversee the agreement between the Town of Canmore and the Government of Canada for the services of the RCMP;
- assist in selecting the Officer in Charge;
- represent the interests of the Council to the Officer in Charge;
- in consultation with the Officer in Charge, develop a yearly plan of priorities and strategies for municipal policing;
- assist the Officer in Charge respecting the implementation and operation of the yearly plan;
- represent the interests and concerns of the public to the Officer in Charge;
- assist the Officer in Charge in resolving public complaints;
- maintain a Business Plan further detailing the actions and responsibilities of the RCMP;
- submit the RCMP yearly budget as well as the yearly plan of priorities and strategies to Council for ratification;
- submit an annual report to Council;
- submit to Council for approval the “roles and responsibilities” of the Public Complaints Director; and
- recommend to Council for approval an applicant for Public Complaints Director.
