FOE2014-Banner-wNormHann

As a paddleboard athlete he has raced throughout North America,
As a guide and educator he spent 15 years in the Great Bear Rain Forest,
And as an environmentalist he fought to keep oil tankers off our coastline.

Because of Norm’s passion for the environment and special relationship with the First Nation's community of Hartley Bay, he was adopted into the Raven clan of the Gitga’at First Nation in 2006 and was given the name T’aam Laan which means “Steersman of the Canoe.”

Since then, Norm has stood up for the Great Bear Rainforest and fought to keep oil tankers off our coastline. It started with Norm’s 400km Standup4Greatbear Expedition in 2010 in which he travelled along the proposed tanker route. Most recently he was part of the award winning Standfilm project which was highlighted with his 350km long sup expedition from Old Masset to the totems of the UNESCO World Heritage site Sgang Gwaay.

Join Norm Hann for an evening of adventure, of exploration, and of accounts for an inspiring cause.

Geology Tour of Rundle Rock (Kamenka) Quarry

This off-site geological tour to the local Rundle Rock Building Stone (aka. ‘Kamenka) Quarry will have you stepping back in time … roughly 225 million years.

Join local geologist, Louis A. Kamenka, M.Sc., as he describes the geologically significant mountainscape around you and, most specifically, about the Rundle Rock. Watch as he painstakingly splits each rock by hand to discover the treasures that hide amidst the layers.

Rundle Rock, the local name of this sedimentary rock, is uniquely indigenous to the front ranges of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains. Classified as a fine grained quartzitic siltstone/sandstone, this stone dates back to the Triassic Period (about 225 million years ago)!

First quarried on Mount Rundle by European stone masons working with the CP Railway, Rundle Rock was quickly recognized for its natural ability as a building stone. It can been seen in many of the local homes and buildings which still stand today, including the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel and World Heritage Site: The Cave and Basin.

Recorded in these layers of rock are events and life forms representing the Earth’s environment at this location many millions of years ago. These sedimentary layers, like pages in a book, record life and activity in an ancient sea that existed here over 225 million years ago. At this time the Earth was beginning to recover from the greatest mass extinction ever recorded in geologic history.
