Peter Powning’s “Touchstone” public art sculpture will be installed on the Multiplex site this fall. The piece is a 30 foot sculpture made with stone, cast bronze, and stainless steel.  According to Powning, “the intent of the sculpture is to produce an iconic sculpture of a scale that has impact from a distance but which also provides an intimate experience up close.   It honours Canmore’s history, natural environment, culture, and identity. “

Peter Powning

The Town of Canmore is pleased to announce that New Brunswick artist Peter Powning has been commissioned as the artist to create the latest piece of Community Public Art in Canmore, which will be installed on the Multiplex site.

Since 1970, Peter Powning has lived and worked as an artist in the hills of southern New Brunswick. He is involved in developing broader cultural involvement and awareness through his work and in his community life. He is an advisor to the NB College of Craft and Design, vice president of ArtsLink. a non-profit arts advocacy organisation, president of the Sussex Choral Society and a member of the building committee for the Fundy Civic Centre. He is regularly asked to speak to students, arts organisations and conferences across the country.

Touchstone is a 30 foot tall iconic sculpture made with stone, cast bronze and 316 stainless steel. The sculpture will represent the sweep of human presence from pre-history to contemporary times in an exciting and challenging environment.

A key element of this project will be active community participation. We will be asking people to provide small historical artifacts that Peter can make impressions from for inclusion in the cast bronze portion of the piece. This concept allows for an exciting contemporary sculpture that will act as a canvas for historical material without being didactic or predictably representational.

Background and Purpose of Project

The Town of Canmore has approved a $100,000 commission for a public art installation at the new $39 million Community Multiplex currently under construction in Canmore. The Town has a vision for the facility, “To be an inspiring gathering place that enriches the well-being, enjoyment and aspirations of the community.” The design intent for the Multiplex is largely based on the geography of the town and its evolution from small mining town to the recreational, cultural and vibrant mountain community it is today.

The public art piece will be a three-dimensional sculpture to be located outdoors in a bioswayle, in a prominent part of the main plaza leading to the entrance to the Multiplex on the southwest side of the building.

...The 3 Finalists were:

Ted Fullerton (Ontario)

Peter Powning (New Brunswick)

Doug Taylor (British Columbia)

Each of these artists came to Canmore for a 2-4 day residency during the months of August - October, 201. They each gave a presentation to the community as part of the public art Works Speaker Series - an opportunity to meet the artists and engage in dialogue about Public Art. They then created proposals for the competition in response to the site and community.

Here is a short video on each finalist, made from their presentations in Canmore:

PORTAL XII - Lucie Bause

Local artist Lucie Bause was commissioned as the artist for the latest installment of community public art, an environmental sculpture, located at the new Cougar Creek pedestrian underpass. It was unveiled June 17th 2011.

Lucie was born and raised in Stratford, Ontario. She has studied at Trent University in Ontario, Universidad de Granada in Spain, and the Alberta College of Art and Design. She has been involved in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Canmore, Banff, and Calgary. Her artwork is based on nature, landscape and the environment, and she continues to explore various aspects of these themes.

Lucie_Bause_Video PORTAL XII is made with 15 tonnes of locally quarried Rundle Rock kindly sponsored by Kamenka Quarry. The boulders are arranged in an interactive spiral shape. For Bause, the design is simple, universal and timeless. The concept is based on the global human tradition of "place marking". The design integrates a combination of three established place marking traditions: Standing Stones, Artic Inuckshuk and Japanese Zen Garden.
